Opening of La MaMa Moves! Dance Festival. Norwegian choreographer Kari Hoaas’ latest project, Shadowland, responds to an increasingly unstable post-pandemic world. It is a poetic investigation of continuity and of the body moving through loss. Visually and conceptually inspired by the work of Norwegian visual artist Jan Groth, Shadowland is built around a series of solo dance practices, seeking an expression that is both abstract and poetic while emphasizing the affective and energetic power of movement. The distinct solos Hoaas has created with each dancer appear in shifting constellations, forming choreographic bricolages and larger kinetic events. The resulting performance unfolds as a web of assemblages and changing formats. Shadowland is performed by three dancers together with choreographer Hoaas. Shadowland was created with support from Arts Council Norway, the Fund for Sound and Image Norway, Performing Arts Hub Norway, the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the Norwegian Consulate General in New York. The audience is invited into a visual universe where the space itself is set in motion and transformed. Illuminated rings hang several metres above the audience and move together with the dancers. The costumes contain integrated lighting, and the music engages and surprises both young and old. The audience can experience the performance from multiple angles and perspectives, and is therefore able to influence the work. The piece conveys abstract narratives through relationships and aesthetically absurd tableaux. Drawing on Munch’s life, character and artworks, Morau seeks new images and meanings. He explores how Munch’s illness and the early loss of his mother and sister shaped him as a person and artist, and how these experiences influenced his artistic expression. Central to the work is the tension between order and passion, discipline and illness. Edvard (2015) was a dance production by Carte Blanche in collaboration with La Veronal / Marcos Morau and Tanz Bremen. The work was presented at Studio Bergen and at The Norwegian National Opera & Ballet, and toured internationally, including performances at the Tanz Bremen Festival (Germany) and Małopolski Ogród Sztuki in Kraków (Poland). In an American-sounding nonsense language, the performers address the audience and each other. At times they also sing — improvised tones emerging in the moment, forming part of a varied and engaging electronic soundscape. While the performers’ actions continually trigger laughter and curiosity, the use of light and reflections adds further layers of atmosphere. With Soft Machine, the creators seek to provoke reflection and offer new ways of viewing our restless, consumer-driven world. Even as many are concerned with climate and the environment, we continue to fill our carts with things we do not need. Has consumerism become a major environmental paradox?
